WIAA boys basketball: Watch Cedar Grove-Belgium upset Roncalli on half court buzzer-beater
KOHLER — The Cedar Grove-Belgium boys basketball team's season was supposed to be done three games ago, at least according to the WIAA seedings in the Division 4 playoffs.
The Rockets have pulled off a string of upsets but nothing quite like what happened Thursday in the sectional semifinals against No. 1-seeded Roncalli.
With the game deadlocked at 63 in overtime, Thomas Wiesner launched a prayer of a heave from half court which was answered. Cedar Grove-Belgium 66, Roncalli 63. Final.
After being seeded No. 7 in their half sectional, the Rockets defeated No. 10 Ozaukee 75-62 last Tuesday before stunning second-seeded and No. 5 state-ranked Kohler 83-81 in the regional semifinals three days later.
A 72-58 win over No. 6 seeded last Saturday in the regional final, Reedsville set up Thursday's meeting with Roncalli.
Cedar Grove-Belgium's Cinderella run might not be over either, as the Rockets will face No. 6-seeded The Prairie School at 5 p.m. Saturday in Whitefish Bay for a chance to reach the state tournament for the first time in school history.
It would continue a string of success for the Rockets programs, winning state titles in both girls soccer and boys cross country in the past 12 months.
