Two former Washington County prep hoops stars are going to the Big Dance with American
A pair of Washington County high school graduates will close their college basketball careers in the NCAA Tournament.
Matt Rogers, a 6-foot-9 forward and 2020 St. Maria Goretti graduate, was named Patriot League Tournament MVP after leading No. 2-seed American University to the conference championship and a spot in the Big Dance with a 74-52 victory over No. 5 Navy on Wednesday. Rogers had 25 points and eight rebounds in the title game.
Lincoln Ball, a 6-6 guard and 2020 Williamsport graduate, added three points and four rebounds in the championship game.
Rogers and Ball are both graduate students in their final seasons at American. The Eagles (22-12) are currently projected to be a No. 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament, according to ESPN's Joe Lunardi, which would place them in a First Four game against another No. 16 seed Tuesday or Wednesday.
Rogers, who has started all 34 games this season, leads American in scoring at 17.0 points per game. He also averages 5.6 rebounds.
Ball has started 19 games and played in all 34 contests for the Eagles. He is averaging 3.9 points, a team-high 5.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists.
American rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat No. 7-seed Lafayette 71-69 in the Patriot League quarterfinals on March 6. Ball scored a career-high 13 points and added six rebounds and four assists, and Rogers added five points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
In the Patriot semifinals on March 9, the Eagles defeated No. 3-seed Colgate, 72-62. Rogers had 15 points, five rebounds and two assists, and Ball added 10 points.
A new chapter: Jaime Mason-Lego, who coached at Clear Spring for 25 years, takes over as Hancock AD
Ball was The Herald-Mail's Washington County Boys Basketball Player of the Year in 2000, averaging 16.4 points, 9.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.3 steals before a broken foot ended his season a month early. He also earned all-state first-team honors. Ball also earned all-county first-team honors as a junior.
Rogers earned all-county first-team honors with the Gaels in 2020, averaging 12.4 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game. He earned All-Baltimore Catholic League second-team honors. As a junior, he helped Goretti win the 2019 BCL title.
The NCAA Tournament men's selection show is Sunday at 6 p.m. on CBS.
