Texas stuns Texas A&M in 2OT thriller, make case for NCAA Tournament
Rodney Terry and the Texas Longhorns will live to see another day at the SEC tournament in Nashville. The Longhorns took down their in-state rival Texas A&M in a double-OT thriller from Bridgestone Arena.
The game opened with a defensive battle as both teams struggled to find early rhythm. Texas A&M struck first with a layup from Henry Coleman III, but Texas responded with a dunk from Ze’Rik Onyema to keep pace. After a slow first few minutes, the Aggies built a narrow lead, helped by a three-pointer from Manny Obaseki at the 16:57 mark. Tre Johnson answered for Texas, and the game remained tightly contested through the first half.
At halftime, Texas led 33-27 after a late three-pointer from Jordan Pope. Texas A&M started the second half strong, with back-to-back baskets from Andersson Garcia and Hayden Hefner cutting the deficit to one. A layup by Wade Taylor IV gave the Aggies a 37-36 lead at the 17:40 mark, setting the stage for a back-and-forth battle.
The lead changed multiple times as both teams traded baskets, with Johnson and Tramon Mark leading Texas, while Taylor and Garcia kept the Aggies in contention. A late jumper by Kaluma and a pair of free throws by Taylor IV tied the game at 73-73, forcing overtime.
In the first overtime period, Texas A&M took an early 75-73 lead after free throws from Obaseki. Both teams struggled to score until Johnson hit a clutch three-pointer to bring Texas within one with 1:04 remaining. The Longhorns tied the game at 79-79 with just four seconds left on a dunk from Shedrick, sending the game into a second overtime.
Texas dominated the final overtime, with Johnson and Pope sinking crucial baskets to give the Longhorns an 87-85 lead. Pope extended the margin with a key jumper, and Texas sealed the game at the free-throw line, holding off the Aggies for a 94-89 victory.
Johnson led Texas with a team-high 21 points, while Tramon Mark added 18. Taylor IV finished with 22 points for the Aggies, and Obaseki chipped in 17.
Texas will now look to play No. 4 Tennessee tomorrow.
