PIAA SWIMMING: Scranton Prep’s Kaszuba wins medal; Dallas relay team strikes gold in girls Class 2A meet
Scranton Prep sophomore Eva Kaszuba added some hardware to a busy winter sports season by reaching the award’s podium at the PIAA Class 2A Swimming and Diving Championships.
Kaszuba, who is also a member of the Scranton Prep girls basketball team that is still playing in the state tournament, earned an eighth-place medal in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 6.93 seconds to highlight the performances from Lackawanna League athletes at the Kinney Natatorium at Bucknell University on Thursday night.
Indiana’s Peyton Scott won the gold in 1:03.15.
“It was such a cool experience, especially after coming in 15th last year and coming back to win a medal this year,” said Kaszuba, who qualified for the final with a time of 1:06.09 in the morning preliminaries. “At the start, I was so excited, and seeing my parents, teammates, and coaches in the stands cheering me was exciting and made me proud.
“Doing the two sports has been tough on my mental health, but my teammates helped me, and winning a medal makes it all worth it.”
Dallas finished the two-day meet with a gold in the 400 free relay. The team of Maria-Lucia Priore, Audrey Haydu, Peyton Stauffer, and Lydia Gonzales had a time of 3:33.15. The victory helped the Mountaineers finish third in the team standings with 146 points.
Mount Pleasant won the team championship with 189 points. Scranton Prep finished 15th overall with 54 points.
Scranton Prep’s Rebecca Oakes completed a busy two days in Lewisburg.
A day after winning a seventh-place medal in the 100 butterfly, the sophomore finished 10th overall and second in the B Final in the 100 free. Oakes had a time of 54.32 in the morning preliminaries and improved on that to touch in 54.00.
Dallas’ Peyton Stauffer won the B Final in 53.18, cutting down from her 54.76 qualifying time.
Mount Pleasant’s Lily King, a North Carolina State commit, won the gold with a state-record time of 47.31. She beat her mark of 48.15 from the preliminaries that improved on her winning time of 48.38 last season.
Oakes also competed with teammates Sophia Galko, Kaszuba, and Ella Schofield to finish 10th in the 200 medley relay, and Galko, Schofield, and Marin Purcell to finish 12th in the 200 free relay on Wednesday.
WVC
MMI Prep’s Mary Kate Kupsky earned a silver medal, and Dallas’ Lydia Gonzales won a fourth-place medal in the 500 freestyle.
Kupsky, the District 2 champion, had a time of 5:03.77 in the preliminaries and broke the 5-minute mark in the final. She went out in 27.48 seconds and closed with a final 25 yards in 28.48 to touch the wall in 4:58.69.
Gonzales had a fast start as well, with a 26.65 in the first 25, and she had a total time of 5:02.61 to finish fourth.
Both WVC athletes repeated as medal winners in the event.
Ava Jochims won the gold in 4:50.75 to make the National Federation Honor Roll.
