No. 3 Washington showcases scoring depth in quarterfinal win over No. 6 Mitchell
The Washington girls basketball team outscored Mitchell 31-13 in the second and third quarter to pull away during their 55-38 quarterfinal win.
The momentum shifted in the second quarter when the Warriors held the Kernels to three points. Washington girls basketball coach Jamie Parish acknowledged they made some adjustments in the second but also said because they’re able to go eight deep and because of the way they manage their rotation, they feel like they’re able to pull away from teams in the middle of the second quarter.
“Because our kids have played about three or four minutes less than their kids, we're just a little bit fresher,” Parish said. “So we're making better decisions. We're a little more explosive during that part of the basketball game.”
The Warriors also did a tremendous job on defense, limiting Mitchell to 25% shooting on the night. Parish said Washington’s defensive game plan was to run the Kernels off the line and make Mitchell take difficult mid-range jumpers. To their credit, Mitchell still shot 39% from three on 18 attempts.
Lauren Van Overschelde was the lone Mitchell player to reach double figures. She scored 12 points on 4-of-12 shooting but made three 3-pointers.
On the other side of the ball the Warriors showed exactly why they’re such a dangerous offensive team. They had three players score in double figures with Grace Peterson, Dana Harpe, and Rylan Kennett scoring 11, 11, and 10. But Washington also had six players score five or more points.
That offensive balance makes Washington a difficult team to guard, Parish said. Because they’re so deep a lot of times they’ll have the other team’s third or fourth best defender guarding a player capable of scoring in bunches.
“It's really hard to guard, you know, I look at it as a coach from the other side,” Parish said. “And who do you take away?”
