Nets fall 6 games behind Bulls in Eastern Conference play-in standings
The Brooklyn Nets (22-44) came into Thursday's game at the Chicago Bulls (28-38) with an outside shot of earning the 10th seed in the Eastern Conference if they beat Chicago. Brooklyn had its best performance in the third quarter, but similar to what has been happening with the Nets since coming out of the All-Star Break, they couldn't sustain their good play for 48 minutes.
"The controllables. You look at the second-chance points, they (the Bulls) had nine of them in the fourth quarter with five fast-break points. A lot of those they, we know they're a really good running team, were out of our misses," Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez said following the 116-110 loss in Chicago. The Bulls ended the game outscoring the Nets 19-5 in fastbreak points, but the fourth quarter showed Brooklyn's lack of effectiveness.
"We didn't shoot as well in the second half, but that's fine as long as we take the good shots or the right shots," Fernandez continued. "Defensively, those second-chance (points) and transition (defense) was an issue. Offensively, we fell in love with the mid-range shot. We took 25 of them when, in that first half, we had 21 assists. We were good at the rim. We were good from three, and just thinking about those 25 mid-range shots."
To Fernandez's point, the Nets were more efficient in the first half than they were in the second half and shot selection looked like it had something to do with the change of offensive efficiency. However, it seems like Brooklyn's shooting in general did not show up in the second half, especially as their three-point shooting went from 50.0% in the first half to 20.0% in the second half.
"I'm okay with like 12 to 14 (mid-range shots), but all those should have been sprayed for threes, and we were not willing to do it or shoot it," Fernandez explained. After this loss, the Nets trail the Bulls by six games in the Eastern Conference standings, making it less likely that Brooklyn will be able to make up the ground necessary to get the 10th seed, the last spot in the play-in tournament.
