Morgantown set to battle George Washington in Class AAAA state semifinals
Mar. 13—CHARLESTON — The Morgantown High girls' basketball team will meet a familiar state tournament foe as the Mohigans will square off with George Washington on Friday evening in the Class AAAA semifinals of the WVSSAC girls basketball tournament in Charleston.
The Mohigans and Patriots battled in the 2024 semifinals, with MHS coming out on top in a 4-over-1 upset.
No. 2 Morgantown defeated No. 7 Washington 86-54 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, while the 6-seeded Patriots downed No. 3 Parkersburg 59-50.
Sophomore Jeriyah Pryor led George Washington in the quarters with 28 points and 15 rebounds, while the entire starting five made at least one three-point basket.
"Defensively, we have to be able to slow their guards down, " MHS head coach John Fowkes said. "We can't allow penetration because they can take you off the dribble and then kick it out to a good shooter."
One thing MHS can take advantage of in the contest against the Patriots is their size.
"We are very long and athletic, and we hope that'll help us on the glass, " Fowkes said. "George Washington is a very scrappy team who is athletic. We respect their ability to hustle and rebound ; they're a tough matchup for any team."
The Mohigans enjoyed 32 points from sophomore Kayli Kellogg in the opening-round victory over Washington.
Senior Sadaya Jones added 16 points for the Mohigans, and sophomore Tatum Devries added 15, shooting 6 of 8 from the field on Wednesday.
MHS totaled 37 rebounds, 20 assists, and 22 steals while forcing 26 turnovers against Washington.
"As has been our staple all year, pressure defense is vital to our team, " Fowkes said. "We take pride in how we guard. Offensively, we just need to continue to do what we do."
No. 2 Morgantown and No. 6 George Washington will tip off inside the Charleston Coliseum on Friday at 7:15 p.m., with the winner earning a spot in Saturday's Class AAAA championship at 5:00 p.m.
