Check out Bucks County girls basketball second-round results for the PIAA state playoffs
The PIAA girls basketball tournament continued this week, with five Bucks County area still in the mix to win a coveted state title. Check out the second-round matchups, scores and recaps, and see which teams advanced to the quarterfinals.
Second-round matchups for the PIAA Girls Basketball State Championships:
Class 5A
(11-1) Bethlehem Catholic 53, (1-2) Gwynedd Mercy 38
The Monarchs’ impressive season came to an end against District 11 champions and last year’s state semifinalist Bethlehem Catholic. Brooke Evans led the Monarchs with nine points, while promising freshman Chloe McCarthy had seven. The Monarchs finished the season 23-5 under first-year head coach Taylor Sweeney. The team will return AACA MVP Bailey Balkir and several young players, including Evans and McCarthy, next year.
Palin Coleman led Bethlehem Catholic with 17 points, while Aliyah Brame contributed 13.
(12-1) Archbishop Wood 58, (1-3) Villa Maria 32
Ryan Carter poured in 20 points, mostly in the first half, as the Vikings cruised to the win against District One’s Villa Maria. Emily Knouse tallied 11 points and four assists, while Emma Seckinger and Sophia Topkas added seven points apiece. Ten players scored for the Vikings, who were able to get their reserves quality playoff experience.
Class 4A
(12-3) Lansdale Catholic 63, (6-1) Forest Hills 25
Grace McDonough posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Ali Kaltenbacher joined the club with 10 points and 11 rebounds in a dominant showing by the Crusaders. It was impressive performances across the board for LC, with Isabella Ciccocelli scoring 14 points on four 3-pointers, and Nadia Yemola contributing 11 points.
(3-3) Northern Lebanon 47, (1-1) Villa Joseph Marie 37
The Jems concluded their season, which included a second straight district championship, against Northern Lebanon. The Jems took an early lead, and were up 27-26 halfway through the fourth quarter after Riley Deal’s basket. That would be VJM's final lead, as Olivia Shutter scored 10 points in the quarter for NL. In the final minutes of the game, Saorise Phillips had five points and three rebounds, and Kasey Weimer hit six free throws, finishing with 15 points.
Class 1A
(3-3) Greenwood 51, (1-3) Upper Bucks Christian 12
A historic season for Upper Bucks came to a close against Greenwood, a state semifinalist last year. This was the first time in program history that an Upper Bucks Christian basketball team – boys or girls – made the PIAA playoffs. The Bucks added to the history books when they won their first-round game 36-30.

Two local teams advanced to the quarterfinal round of the PIAA girls basketball championships after winning in the second round. Both games will be played Saturday, March 15. Check out a preview of both matchups here.
Class 4A:
- (12-3) Lansdale Catholic vs. (7-1) Oakland Catholic, 2:30 p.m. at West Branch H.S.
Class 5A:
- (12-1) Archbishop Wood vs. (11-1) Bethlehem Catholic, 4:30 p.m. at Geigle Complex, Reading
