Centerville edges Deubrook Area, only high seed to win on opening day of State B girls tourney
HURON — Eighth-seeded Deubrook Area nearly made it a clean sweep of upsets Thursday in the opening day of the state Class B girls basketball tournament.
The Dolphins, playing in their first state tourney in the 50-year history of the program, gave defending champion, top-seeded and unbeaten Centerville all it wanted before falling 51-46 on Thursday in the Huron Arena.
The three other games went to lower seeds with No. 5 Bennett County, No. 7 Dell Rapids St. Mary and No. 6 Sanborn-Central Woonsocket also advancing to the semifinals.
No. 1 Centerville 51, No. 8 Deubrook Area 46
Deubrook Area didn't play perfect, but certainly put up a valiant effort against the defending champions, leading 10-7 after one quarter and for a good portion of the first three quarters.
Centerville rallied to lead 31-30 after three quarters and still held that one-point advantage (39-38) when Althea Gust drailed a 3-pointer with 4:24 remaining,. A field goal by Emma Marshall and a 3-pointer by Izzie Eide with 1:32 left gave the Tornadoes the breathing room they needed.
"I thought out kids played extremely hard and battle to the very end," Deubrook Area coach Brad DeBeer said. "We turned the ball over a little too much in the second half and they took advatange of that."
Centerville made only six of 30 3-point attempts in the game, but hit some timely ones in the second half. Eide led the squad with 22 points and six rebounds. Marshall added 15 and nine. Gust chipped in with 11 points.
Mataya Gouws, who battled foul trouble, led Deubrook Area with 15 points and six rebounds. Kylee Johnson added 12 and nine. Matte Bauman scored nine points.
"I'm super proud of how our girls handled the situation and took on the Best in Class B as of right now and didn't back down," DeBeer said.

Bennett County led 51-40 with 38 seconds left and held on for the win.
