Carlos Romero finally breaks silence on Mbappe incident – ‘Had to isolate myself’
Espanyol’s Carlos Romero has found himself under intense scrutiny ever since his tackle on Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe.
The incident sparked significant debate, with many questioning the intent behind his challenge. As a result, Romero has been at the centre of discussions, both on and off the pitch.
Recently, he addressed the media in a press conference, reflecting on the highs and lows he has experienced throughout the season.
One of the main topics of discussion was the backlash he faced following his controversial challenge on Mbappe. The reaction from fans and critics alike was overwhelming, with some going as far as sending threats.
Facing the criticism
Romero admitted that the situation became so difficult that he had to step away from social media. The constant flood of messages made it impossible for him to focus, leading him to deactivate his accounts.
He explained that upon entering the dressing room and checking his phone, he was met with an overwhelming number of comments.
“It has already happened with more footballers, arriving in the locker room, picking up the mobile and seeing all comments on social networks. I had to turn them off,” he began saying.
Had to take action
The defender expressed his disappointment over the accusations directed at him. He found it frustrating that some believed he had deliberately intended to harm or end a fellow professional’s career.
“My partner and I isolated ourselves, we didn’t want to receive anything. Everything we read before removing the comments was unbelievable.”
According to him, such claims were far from the truth, as no player would intentionally set out to injure an opponent. He described the challenge as an unfortunate incident that was blown out of proportion.
Despite the controversy, Romero stated that Mbappe himself did not make a big deal out of the situation.
To be accused of going to hurt or injure and trying to end someone’s career are big words.
“No player would have that intention, it was a fortuitous incident. Even Kylian didn’t say anything to me and didn’t take it to another extreme,” he added.
While the backlash has been difficult to handle, Romero remains focused on moving forward. He understands that criticism is part of football, but he hopes that such extreme reactions can be avoided in the future.
